Face Shape = Frame Shape, right?

Every eyewear company has its own advice on matching frame shapes to face shapes. Tell me if this sounds familiar, "Do you have a round, square, oval, or heart-shaped face? Then this shape frame is perfect!"

The logic is:

  • Round face? Angular frames to add structure,
  • Square face? Round frames to soften features,
  • Oval faces? Any shape works!
  • Heart-shaped faces? Bottom-heavy frames to balance out a wider forehead.

It sounds scientific, right?

At Point Superior, we believe that this approach is fundamentally flawed.

So What's a Better Strategy?

In his article, "Why You Should Ignore Face Shape When Buying Sunglasses", Peter Nguyen, the founder of The Essential Man, tackles this very issue.

Nguyen argues that the focus on face shape is misleading. Instead, he argues that other factors play a more important role in finding the perfect pair of glasses.

  • the size of the frame
  • the fit on your face
  • your personality

We, too, believe that focusing on face shape misses the mark.

Instead, we encourage you to consider the size and proportion of the frames in relation to your head, your lifestyle, and how the glasses make you feel when you wear them.

1. Why Size Matters (More Than Shape)

The most important factor when choosing eyewear isn’t the shape—it’s the size. The size of your frames directly impacts how they fit on your face and, ultimately, how comfortable and flattering they are.

Poorly fitting glasses can slide down your nose, pinch your temples, or leave unsightly marks on your skin. Worse, they can distort your vision if the lenses are not correctly aligned with your eyes.

On the other hand, well-sized frames will sit comfortably, align properly with your eyes, and enhance your overall appearance without overwhelming your features.

Here are a few key aspects of size to consider:

  • Frame Height: The top of the frame should sit at your eyebrows. The bottom of the frame should sit 2/3 down your nose.
  • Frame Width: There should be no pinching or excess space around your head.

2. Does it Fit?

Ideally, a single pair of glasses should cover 95% of your use cases.

Take an evaluation of your lifestyle habits and needs.

  • Are you in more conservative and corporate environments? Go for a match.
  • Do you do a lot of physical activity? Go lightweight and durable.
  • Do you lose things often? Go budget conscious.

3. Frames Have "Culture"

"Culture" is not the right word. Frames have associations, relevance and context. This is another crucial factor to consider.

Many frames have been made famous by famous people. These associations cannot be ignored.

Iconic associations,

  • Steve Jobs
  • Malcolm X
  • Hunter S. Thompson
  • Harry Potter
  • Teddy Roosevelt
  • Bono
  • John Lennon
  • Mahatma Gandhi

When you're selecting your frames, remember to choose a frame that associates with people you resonate with. Your eyewear should be a reflection of your uniqueness.

Focus on What Really Matters

At Point Superior, we believe that the best frame for you is the one that fits.

  1. Fits your facial proportions,
  2. Fits your lifestyle
  3. Fits your personality

Pay attention to the size and fit of the frames. After all, your comfort, vision, and confidence are what really matter in choosing the perfect pair of glasses.

So next time you’re shopping for eyewear, ditch the face shape guides and focus on finding frames that truly fit. Trust us—your face will thank you.
